Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center
|
|
| The Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, located in Annapolis, MD, stands proud today. Its unique segmented radial façade offers a panoramic view of the United States Naval Academy. JE Berkowitz, LP fabricated insulating glass units with Guardian’s Sunguard AG 50 on CrystalGray™ glass. This project is one of the first in the nation to incorporate this coating.
The center serves as a monument for the Undergraduate College of the US Navy. This now historic Visitor Center gives everyone an opportunity to be a part of the Navy’s life. It features exhibit areas designed by the Navy’s own architect including: “Graduate in Space” with the Freedom 7 space capsule, “John Paul Jones”, and a sample Midshipmen Room.
The options are plentiful when visiting the academy. You can catch a short film in the 84-seat theater, explore the gift shop, or observe the Navy’s traditional “noon meal formation.” If you need a break from all of the excitement, you can wind down with the breathtaking view seen through the glass curtainwall. JE Berkowitz joined forces with Ray Fountain, the project manager for Anco Glass, to make this project come to life.
Owned by Allen Crim, Anco Glass is a well-known glazing contractor with locations in both Maryland and Delaware. JEB supplied fabricated insulating glass units for unitizing and installation on this project. The high performance insulating glass units were composed of 1/4” AG 50 on CrystalGray™ (2) with a 3/8” silver anodized airspacer and 3/8” clear annealed laminate. The units create an architectural element, which balances direct sunlight with the reflections from the river, eliminating the need for interior window treatments. Sunguard AG 50 was chosen for its neutral appearance, reducing outdoor sun glare and lowering solar heat gain by 20 percent.
“We excel on a project like this which requires high performance fabricated glass,” says Robert Price, Director of Sales for JE Berkowitz, “the course remains the same. We are thrilled to be a part of this project!” |
